ಬಾಲ ಕಾಂಡ
ದ್ವಿಷಷ್ಟಿತಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.

ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಂ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ತು ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ |
ವ್ಯಶ್ರಾಮ್ಯತ್ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇ ರಾಜಾ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನೇ ರಘುನಂದನ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ರಘುನಂದನ ! ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ ರಾಜಾ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಮ್ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನೇ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇ ವ್ಯಶ್ರಾಮ್ಯತ್ ||

'Oh Raghunandana !Oh the best men ! That king with great fame taking Sunassepha with him halted at Pushkara around noon time'.

ತಸ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ರಮಮಾಣಸ್ಯ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫೋ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ |
ಪುಷ್ಕರಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಹ ||
ತಪ್ಯಂತಮ್ ಋಷಿಭಿಸ್ಸಾರ್ಥಂ ಮಾತುಲಂ ಪರಮಾತುರಃ ||

ಸ|| ತಸ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ರಮಮಾಣಸ್ಯ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫೋ ಪುಷ್ಕರ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಂ ಆಗಮ್ಯ ಋಷಿಭಿಸ್ಸಾರ್ಥಂ ತಪ್ಯಂತಂ ಮಾತುಲಂ ಪರಮಾತುರಃ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಹ ||

While that king was resting, Sunassepha saw his uncle Viswamitra of great fame doing penance along with other Rishis in Pushkar.

ವಿವರ್ಣವದನೋ ದೀನಃ ತೃಷ್ಣಯಾ ಚ ಶ್ರಮೇಣ ಚ||
ಪಪಾತಾಂಕೇ ಮುನೇಆಶು ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಚೇದ ಮುವಾಚ ಹ ||

ಸ|| ವಿವರ್ಣವದನೋ ದೀನಃ ತೃಷ್ಣಯಾ ಚ ಶ್ರಮೇಣ ಚ ಮುನೇ ಅಂಕೇ ಪಪಾತ | ಇದಂ ಆಶು ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಚ ಉವಾಚ ||

Tired, restless and thirsty he fell into the lap of that sage and spoke to him as follows.

ನ ಮೇ ಅಸ್ತಿ ಮಾತಾ ನ ಪಿತಾ ಜ್ಞಾತಯೋ ಬಾಂಧವಾಃ ಕುತಃ||
ತ್ರಾತು ಮರ್ಹಸಿ ಮಾಂ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಮುನಿ ಪುಂಗವ|
ತ್ರಾತಾ ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ಮುನಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ಭಾವನಃ ||

ಸ|| ಮೇ ಮಾತಾ ನ ಅಸ್ತಿ ನ ಪಿತಾ ಜ್ಞಾತಯೋ ಬಾಂಧವಾಃ ಕುತಃ || ಹೇ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ! ಮುನಿಪುಂಗವ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ತ್ರಾತು ಮರ್ಹಸಿ | ಹೇ ಮುನಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ತ್ರಾತಾ ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ | ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ಭಾವನಃ ||

"I have no mother or father and even relatives or known people anywhere. Oh Kind one ! Best of Seers ! Rightfully you can save me. Oh best of Seers ! You are the saviour for all. You protect all".

ರಾಜಾ ಚ ಕೃತಕಾರ್ಯಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಅಹಂ ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುರವ್ಯಯಃ|
ಸ್ವರ್ಗಲೋಕ ಮುಪಾಶ್ನೀಯಾಂ ತಪಸ್ತಪ್ತ್ವಾಹ್ಯನುತ್ತಮಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ರಾಜಾ ಚ ಕೃತ ಕಾರ್ಯಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ | ಅಹಂ ಅವ್ಯಯಃ ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುಃ | ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ ತಪಃ ತಪ್ತ್ವಾ ಸವರ್ಗ ಲೋಕ್ ಮುಪಾಶ್ನೀಯಾಂ |

"Let the kings work be done. I want long life. I should perform best of penance and attain heaven".

ತ್ವಂ ಮೇ ನಾಥೋ ಹ್ಯನಾಥಸ್ಯ ಭವ ಭವ್ಯೇನ ಚೇತಸಾ |
ಪಿತೇವ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ್ ತ್ರಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ ಕಿಲ್ಬಿಷಾತ್ ||

ಸ|| ಭವ್ಯೇನ ಚೇತಸಾ ಅನಾಧಸ್ಯ ಮೇ ತ್ವಂ ಹಿ ನಾಥೋ ಭವ | ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ್ ಕಿಲ್ಬಿಷಾತ್ ಪಿತೇವ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ತ್ರಾತು ಮರ್ಹಸಿ ||

"With great heart , only you can save me who has no protection. Oh ! Great one ! you can save me from this calamity like a father saves his children."

ತಸ್ಯ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ |
ಸಾಂತ್ವಯಿತ್ವಾ ಬಹುವಿಥಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಇದಂ ಉವಾಚ ಹ ||

ಸ|| ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ ತಸ್ಯ ತತ್ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಬಹುವಿಥಂ ಸಾಂತ್ವಯಿತ್ವಾ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಇದಂ ವಚನಮ್ ಉವಾಚ ಹ ||

The great Tapasvi, Viswamitra having heard his plea and consoling him spoke to his children.

ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ ಪಿತರಃ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಜನಯಂತಿ ಶುಭಾರ್ಥಿನಃ |
ಪರಲೋಕ ಹಿತಾರ್ಥಾಯ ತಸ್ಯ ಕಾಲೋ ಅಯಂ ಆಗತಃ ||

ಸ|| ಪಿತರಃ ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ ಶುಭಾರ್ಥಿನಃ ಪರಲೋಕಹಿತಾರ್ಥಾಯ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಜನಯಂತಿ | ತಸ್ಯ ಕಾಲಃ ಅಯಂ ಆಗತಃ ||

"The parents bear children so that they are blessed with all good things in this world and in the other world too ! Now that time has come".

ಅಯಂ ಮುನಿಸುತೋ ಬಾಲೋ ಮತ್ತಃ ಶರಣಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ |
ಅಸ್ಯ ಜೀವಿತ ಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕುರುತ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಕಾಃ ||

ಸ|| ಅಯಂ ಮುನಿಸುತೋ ಬಾಲೋ ಮತ್ತಃ ಶರಣಂ ಇಚ್ಛತಿ | ಹೇ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಕಾಃ ಅಸ್ಯ ಜೀವಿತ ಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ಪ್ರಿಅಯಂ ಕುರುತ |

"This ascetic boy is asking for my protection. Oh dear sons ! To protect his life I hope you can do the needful".

ಸರ್ವೇ ಸುಕೃತ ಕರ್ಮಾಣಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಧರ್ಮ ಪರಾಯಣಾಃ |
ಪಶುಭೂತಾ ನರೇಂದ್ರಸ್ಯ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಮಗ್ನೇಃ ಪ್ರಯಛ್ಛತ ||

ಸ|| (ತೇ) ಸರ್ವೇ ಸುಕೃತ ಕರ್ಮಾಣಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಧರ್ಮ ಪರಾಯಣಃ | ನರೇಂದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪಶು ಭೂತಾ ಅಗ್ನೇಃ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛತ |

"All of you have have done good deeds and followed the righteous path. Becoem the sacrificial animal of the King and satisfy the Lord of Fire".

ನಾಥನಾಂಶ್ಚ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫೋ ಯಜ್ಞಶ್ಚಾವಿಘ್ನಿತೋ ಭವೇತ್ |
ದೇವತಾ ಸ್ತರ್ಪಿತಾಶ್ಚ ಸ್ಯ್ಃ ಮಮಚಾಪಿ ಕೃತಂ ವಚಃ ||

ಸ|| ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಃ ನಾಥನಾಂ ಚ ದೇವತಾಃ ತರ್ಪಿತಾಃ ಚ ಯಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಅವಿಘ್ನಿತೋ ಭವೇತ್ | ಮಮಾಪಿ ಸ್ಯುಃ ಕೃತಂ ವಚಃ ||

"Then Sunassepha will be saved. The Devas will be satisfied. The sacrfice will be completed without obstacles. You would have kept my word".

ಮುನೇಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಮಧುಷ್ಯಂದಾದಯಸ್ಸುತಾಃ|
ಸಾಭಿಮಾನಂ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಸಲೀಲಮಿದಮಬ್ರುವನ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ಮಧುಷ್ಯಂದಾದಯಃ ಸುತಾಃ ಮುನೇಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸ ಅಭಿಮಾನಂ ಸ ಲೀಲಂ ಇದಂ ಅಬ್ರುವನ್ ||

'Oh Best of men ! Madhushyanda and other sons having heard the sages words were offended and spoke as follows rediculing the sage'.

ಕಥಮಾತ್ಮಸುತಾನ್ ಹಿತ್ವಾ ತ್ರಾಯಸೇ ಅಸ್ಯ ಸುತಂ ವಿಭೋ|
ಅಕಾರ್ಯಮಿವ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಃ ಶ್ವಮಾಂಸಮಿವ ಭೋಜನೇ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ವಿಭೋ ಕಥಂ ಆತ್ಮ ಸುತಾನ್ ಹಿತ್ವಾ ಅಸ್ಯ ಸುತಂ ತ್ರಾಯಸೇ | ಭೋಜನೇ ಶ್ವಮಾಂಸಂ ಇವ ಅಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ ಇವ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಃ ||

"Oh Dear Lord ! sacrificing your own son to save somebody else's son is unworkable like having dogs meat in the meal !"

ತೇಷಾಂ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಮುನಿಪುಂಗವಃ |
ಕ್ರೋಧ ಸಂರಕ್ತ ನಯನೋ ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

ಸ|| ಮುನಿಪುಂಗವಃ ತೇಷಾಮ್ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಣಾಂ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕ್ರೋಥ ಸಂರಕ್ತ ನಯನಃ ವ್ಯಾಹರ್ತುಂ ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

'Hearing those words of his sons the sage with eyes turned red with anger spoke as follows'.

ನಿಸ್ಸಾಧ್ವಸಮಿದಂ ಪ್ರೋಕ್ತಂ ಧರ್ಮಾದಪಿ ವಿಗರ್ಹಿತಮ್ |
ಅತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ತು ಮದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ದಾರುಣಂ ರೋಮಹರ್ಷಣಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಮತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅತಿಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಇದಂ ನಿಸ್ಸಾಧ್ವಸಂ ಪ್ರೋಕ್ತಂ ದಾರುಣಮ್ ರೋಮಹರ್ಷಣಮ್ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ ಅಪಿ ವಿಗರ್ಹಿತಮ್ ।

"Disregarding my words and speaking with disrespect is horrible and hair raising. It is against the righteous path".

ಶ್ವಮಾಂಸಭೋಜಿನಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ವಾಶಿಷ್ಠಾ ಇವ ಜಾತಿಷು |
ಪೂರ್ಣಮ್ ವರ್ಷ ಸಹಸ್ರಂ ತು ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಮನುವತ್ಸ್ಯಥ ||

ಸ|| (ತೇ) ಸರ್ವೇ ವಾಶಿಷ್ಠಾ ಇವ ಜಾತಿಷು ಶ್ವಮಾಂಸ ಭೋಜಿನಃ ವರ್ಷ ಸಹಸ್ರಂ ಪೂರ್ಣಮ್ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಂ ಅನುವತ್ಸ್ಯಥ ||

"Like the sons of Vasistha, all of you will live thousand years eating the dogs meat living on the earth".

ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಶಾಪ ಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಮುನಿವರಸ್ತಥಾ |
ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಂ ಉವಾಚಾರ್ತಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ರಕ್ಷಾಂ ನಿರಾಮಯಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಮುನಿವರಃ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಶಾಪ ಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಆರ್ತಂ ನಿರಾಮಯಂ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಂ ರಕ್ಷಾಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಉವಾಚ ||

'That best among sages having thus cursed his sons provided protection for the sorrowful Sunssepha. Then he spoke as follows'.

ಪವಿತ್ರಪಾಶೈರಾಸಕ್ತೋ ರಕ್ತಮಾಲ್ಯಾನುಲೇಪನಃ |
ವೈಷ್ಣವಂ ಯೂಪ ಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ವಾಗ್ಭಿರಗ್ನಿಮುದಾಹರ ||

ಸ|| ಪವಿತ್ರ ಪಾಶೈಃ ಆಶಕ್ತೋ ರಕ್ತಮಾಲ್ಯಾನು ಲೇಪನಃ ವೈಷ್ಣವಂ ಯೂಪಮ್ ಆಸಾದ್ಯ ವಾಗ್ಭಿಃ ಅಗ್ನಿಂ ಉದಾಹರ ||

"Being tied to the Yupa stambha with auspicious ropes and decorated with garlands of red flowers , you will praise the Lord of Fire with your words".

ಇಮೇ ತು ಗಾಧೇ ದ್ವೇ ದಿವ್ಯೇ ಗಾಯೇಥ ಮುನಿಪುತ್ತ್ರಕ |
ಅಂಬರೀಷಸ್ಯ ಯಜ್ಞೇ ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ತತಸ್ಸಿದ್ಧಿಮವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ಮುನಿಪುತ್ತ್ರಕ ! ಅಂಬರೀಷಸ್ಯ ಯಜ್ಞೇ ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ದ್ವೇ ದಿವ್ಯೇ ಗಾಥೇ ಗಾಯೇಥ | ತತಃ ಇಮೇ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಂ ಅವಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ ||

"Oh Son of a sage ! In the sacrifice of Ambarisha, you must sing these two divine songs. Then you will achive your goal".

ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫೋ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ತೇ ದ್ವೇ ಗಾಧೇ ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಃ |
ತ್ವರಯಾ ರಾಜಸಿಂಹಂ ತಮ್ ಅಂಬರೀಷಮುವಾಚಹ||

ಸ|| ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಃ ತೇ ದ್ವೇ ಗಾಧೇ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ತ್ವರಯಾ ರಾಜಸಿಂಹಂ ಅಂಬರೀಷಂ ತಂ ಉವಾಚ ಹ ||

'Then Sunassepha learnt those two mantras quickly and approched Ambarisha,the lion among Kings. Then he spoke as follows'.

ರಾಜಸಿಂಹ ಮಹಾಸತ್ವ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಗಚ್ಛಾವಹೇ ಸದಃ |
ನಿರ್ವರ್ತಯಸ್ವ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ದೀಕ್ಷಾಂ ಚ ಸಮುಪಾವಿಶ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಜಸಿಂಹ ! ಮಹಾಸತ್ವ ! ಸದಃ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಗಚ್ಛಾವಹೇ | ಹೇ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ! ಸಮುಪಾವಿಶಃ ದೀಕ್ಷಾಂ ಚ ನಿರ್ವರ್ತಯಸ್ವ ||

"Oh Rajasimha ! Great powerful man ! Let us go to the council quickly and get set for performing the sacrifice".

ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಋಷಿಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಹರ್ಷಸಮುತ್ಸುಕಃ |
ಜಗಾಮ ನೃಪತಿಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಯಜ್ಞವಾಟಂ ಅತಂದ್ರಿತಃ ||

ಸ|| ಋಷಿಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ನೃಪತಿಃ ಹರ್ಷಸಮುತ್ಸಕಃ ಅತ್ಂದ್ರಿತಃ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಯಜ್ಞವಾಟಮ್ ಜಗಾಮ ||

'Hearing those words of the sage's son, the delighted King went immediately to the sacrificial hall'.

ಸದಸ್ಯಾನುಮತೇ ರಾಜಾ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕೃತಲಕ್ಷಣಮ್|
ಪಶುಂ ರಕ್ತಾಂಬರಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಯೂಪೇ ತಂ ಸಮಬಂಧಯತ್ ||

ಸ|| ರಾಜಾ ಸದಸ್ಯ ಅನುಮತೇ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕೃತ ಲಕ್ಷಣಂ ಪಶುಂ ರಕ್ತಾಂಬರಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಯೂಪೇ ತಂ ಸಮಬಂಧಯತ್ ||

'The king with the approval of the council members then had him decortaed as the Sacrificial animal with garlands of red flowers and tied him to the Sacificial pillar'.

ಸ ಬದ್ಧೋವಾಗ್ನಿರಗ್ರ್ಯಾಭಿಃ ಅಭಿತುಷ್ಟಾವ ತೌ ಸುರೌ |
ಇಂದ್ರಂ ಇಂದ್ರಾನುಜಂ ಚೈವ ಯಥಾವನ್ಮುನಿಪುತ್ತ್ರಕಃ ||

ಸ|| ಸ ಬದ್ಧಃ ಅಗ್ನಿರಗ್ರ್ಯಾಭಿಃ ಮುನಿಪುತ್ತ್ರಕಃ ತೌ ಸುರೌ ಇಂದ್ರಂ ಇಂದ್ರಾನುಜಂ ಚೈವ ಯಥಾವತ್ ಅಭಿತುಷ್ಟಾವ |

'Thus tied the sages son sang in praise of Indra and his brother Agni'.

ತತಃ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ರಹಸ್ಯ ಸ್ತುತಿ ತರ್ಪಿತಃ |
ದೀರ್ಘಮಾಯುಃ ತದಾ ಪ್ರಾದಾತ್ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಾಯ ರಾಘವ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಘವ ! ತತಃ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ ರಹಸ್ಯ ಸ್ತುತಿ ತರ್ಪಿತಃ ತದಾ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಾಯ ದೀರ್ಘಮ್ ಆಯುಃ ಪ್ರಾದಾತ್ ||

'Oh Raghava ! Pleased with the secret prayer Indra granted long life to Sunassepha'.

ಸ ಚ ರಾಜಾ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಯಜ್ಞಸ್ಯ ಚ ಸಮಾಪ್ತವಾನ್ |
ಫಲಂ ಬಹುಗುಣಂ ರಾಮ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರಸಾದಜಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ರಾಮ ! ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಯಜ್ಞಸ್ಯ ಸಮಾಪ್ತವಾನ್ ಬಹುಗುಣಂ ಫಲಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರಸಾದಜಂ ||

"Oh Rama ! The best of men ! Then the king was rewarded with fruits of the sacrifice by Indra in many ways'.

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋsಪಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಭೂಯಸ್ತೇಪೇ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ |
ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ದಸ ವರ್ಷ ಶತಾನಿ ಚ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ಭೂಯಂ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ದಶ ವರ್ಷ ಶತಾನಿ ಚ ತೇಪೇ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ ||

'Oh Best of men ! the righteous Viswamitra then performed penance for another ten thousand years'.
